The parts
How a garage door actually works
Almost every failure traces back to one of these eight components. The opener gets the blame far more often than it deserves — most of the time the problem is a spring, a cable, or a sensor.
Torsion spring
Carries the entire weight of the door. Rated in cycles, not years. The single most common failure.
Lift cables
Transfer the spring's force to the bottom of the door. When one goes, the door racks.
Vertical track
Guides the rollers. Bends easily — usually from a vehicle.
Rollers
Lose their bearings over time and eventually jump the track.
Opener
Moves an already-balanced door. It is not designed to lift a door with a broken spring.
Safety sensors
The two photo eyes near the floor. Knocked out of line more often than anything else on this list.
