If the garage sits under a bedroom, a belt drive is worth the difference: it's dramatically quieter than the chain drive it replaces.
Openers usually give warning before they fail: intermittent response, grinding, reversing halfway, or a door that closes and immediately reopens. That last one is very often just a misaligned safety sensor, which is a cheap fix. It's worth a call before assuming you need a new unit.
If your remote has a row of small switches inside the battery cover, the opener uses a fixed code that never changes — and that is a security problem, not just an old unit.
